Financial Services CISO Guide
In September 2013, Gartner Inc. released a report recommending that its clients investigate alternatives to BlackBerry. Because financial services organizations use BlackBerry widely, this has increased their urgency to define a migration path to the new generation of mobile operating systems: iOS, Android, and Windows Phone.
BlackBerry is a well understood platform across financial services, but many Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) are much less familiar with the newer operating systems. They worry that a migration will increase their risk of data loss.
The trend of Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) for smartphones and tablets adds complexity. On one hand, BYOD can enable cost-effective migration because the organization does not have to buy a large number of new devices for employees. On the other hand, BYOD devices will contain a broad set of apps outside company control that could potentially introduce new security risks.
